we spent a saturday night in mid-october partying with the bumbs for a zombie-themed housewarming show. It brought back memories.
I've known the Bumbs for a few years now. We've had some pretty dramatic and hilarious moments since we first met in late 2015. I even lived with a few of them in this semi-flophouse artists' collective situation on Strouse Avenue in East Nashville, right behind the auto diesel college. It was a two-story duplex full of friends on both floors, sharing everything from recipes to weed to... sometimes utilities via extension cords dangled from the upstairs windows and filled and refilled gallon jugs. Still, the times were mostly good, having each other to battle group depression by marathoning The Office or enraging the neighbors with late-night- (early morning) back-porch jam sessions, fully equipped with saxophone solos... oh, and a fair amount of alcohol. Between lineup changes, moving out of Strouse, moving to different cities and back, and even to different bands, The Bumbs have always made music. There's the band, yes, with current and former members, all powerhouses in the indie music scene, but there are a lot of us who I like to describe as Bumbs-adjacent. We were never in the band, but are always invited in to jam. It's mostly made up of our friend group, but includes pretty much everyone who came through Strouse House since around 2015 to now- in the new place they share with Kevin, former Bumb and immense musical talent in his own right. It is a perpetual jam with The Bumbs, but not in a that cringey jam-my way that it can sometimes be. Instead, it's more like hanging out with a hilarious improv soundtrack.
Still, the essence of The Bumbs is a good vibes, good friends and good music, and there's not much else you could want. These guys are some of the most creative minds I've come across in all my time doing this, so I was excited to get a chance to party with them and celebrate friendship and creativity (and zombies) along with some of the OG crowd and some of our new favorites.
Fronted by Merc Endleman, (vocals, bass) The Bumbs exist somewhere between garage rock nostalgia and a 60s spring dream; with feel good tunes of envy like "Everybody's Trying to Get With My Baby," late night lamentations like, "12 Past 2," and love anthems for the undead like, "Cuz I'm A Zombie." With Brandon Ellsworth on guitar and vocals, Seth Endleman on keys, guitar, and vocals, and Max Laidler on drums, The Bumbs just want you to have a good time.
Merc and Brandon hosted a Halloween house show to celebrate moving back to the east side with acoustic, rock and hip hop sets from Michael Coast, Blackpool Mecca, It's Like That Records- featuring beer pong. It was a zombie-themed housewarming, the night was warm, and the undead stirred. Listen to 'Cuz I'm A Zombie' by The Bumbs and check the gallery below.
